It is best for a puppy to eat puppy food until they are about 3/4 of their anticipated adult size. So in terms of months that would mean to around 5 months for a Chihuahua but around 12-14 months for a German Shepherd. If you puppy is a small breed occasional consumption of adult type food is not going to present any problems so far as growth and development.
